2024 Iowa Scholastic Individual-Play Team Championships

When:  2/25/2024 Sunday, registrations 11:00 am to 11:30 am. Round 1 at noon.

Where:  Iowa State University, 2229 Lincoln Way Ames, IA 50014

Parking: There is a parking garage connected to the Memorial Union which charges $20 for a day
pass. From here, enter the building and head to the third floor. There is free parking at the 500
Wallace Rd Garage near the Gerdin building on campus. From this garage, head down Wallace
Road towards Union Drive, then enter the memorial union and head to the third floor. On weekends,
parking is usually free on campus in areas designated as permit required from Monday – Friday.

Four Sections: Elementary (K-3, K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).  You will not play other students from your school. The top 4 individual scores of players from each school will be counted toward your team score.  See Team Eligibility for exceptions.

Team Eligibility: Teams are of 4 or more students attending the same school; Students must attend the same school with the following exceptions: 6th Graders in Middle School may play for their former K-5 school. Up to two K-6 students may play for middle school and high school Teams/Sections. No more than two middle school students may play for their high school team.

Format: Students will play individual games in a Swiss tournament format and will not play students from their own school. The top four scores from each team will be counted for prize eligibility. All players may play up one section (K-3 player can play in K-6 section).

Time Control: G/30; d5. Each player in all sections will have 30 minutes plus a 5 second delay for each to complete the game.

Rounds: All sections; (4 Rounds): Round 1: Noon, Rounds 2 through 4 ASAP.

Prizes:  Elementary: Team Trophies for the Top 6 K-6 Teams, Top 3 K-3 teams Top four players on each winning team will receive an individual trophy.  Middle and High School Team Trophies for Top 3 Teams.   NEW: Medals for the Top 3 scores in each grade. Players can win both individual and team medals.

Entry Fee: $25 before February 24, 11:59 pm, 2024; $30 thereafter.

US Chess Member ID is Required:  If you are new to chess tournaments and do not have a US Chess ID you may either:

  • Purchase or renew a US Chess Membership online at Join US Chess (exit to www.uschess.org)
  • Enter your expired US Chess ID or enter "9999999" (eight 9s) and purchase an $11 annual membership at the tournament.

Registration: Online Registration closes Saturday at 11:59 pm. On-Site Registration, Sunday, 11:00 to 11;30 am.

Entry fee: $25 prior to Saturday, 11:59 pm. $30 thereafter.
