2021 Arizona Scholastic State Chess Championships

 Qualifier Tournament on Saturday, May 29th

Sections: K-1, K-3, K-5 (Rockefeller Qualifier), 6-8 (Barber Qualifier), 9-12 (Denker and Haring Qualifier)
Each section will have a qualifier tournament on Saturday, May 29.
The qualifier tournament will be 5 rounds, G/25; +5 with the first round starting at 10 am MST. Subsequent rounds paired automatically; there are no scheduled round times. The tournament is expected to last around 5 hours.

Zoom call with webcam required while games are in progress. Pairings are done automatically and are based on highest USCF rating (online, quick or standard). Siblings and/or teammates may be paired. Byes are not permitted. 

 

All players scoring at least 3 out of 5 points in the qualifier tournament will play in the Championship Tournament on Sunday, May 30. All players that do NOT qualify for the championship tournament will play in the Reserve Tournament on Sunday, May 30. You will automatically be registered for your section on Sunday.

 

Championship Tournament on Sunday, May 30th

Sections: K-1, K-3, K-5 (Rockefeller), 6-8 (Barber), 9-12 (Denker and Haring)
The tournament will be 4 rounds, G/25; +5 with the first round starting at 10 am MST. Round times are 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm MST. Subsequent rounds paired by match commands based on highest USCF rating (online, quick or standard). Zoom call with webcam required while games are in progress.Siblings and/or teammates may be paired. Byes are not permitted. 

Conferring of State Titles: Winner(s) of each Championship section held on Sunday will be considered the Arizona State Champion or Arizona State Co-Champion.

State Representatives: In the event of a tie in a Championship section, playoffs will be used to determine the Arizona representative.

Playoffs: If there is no clear qualifier for Rockefeller, Barber, Denker or Haring slot, playoffs will be held 1 hour after the last round ends on Sunday.

 

Reserve Tournament on Sunday, May 30

Sections: K-1, K-3, K-5, 6-8, 9-12

The tournament will be 4 rounds, G/25; +5 with the first round starting at 10 am MST. Subsequent rounds paired automatically based on ChessKid highest USCF rating (online, quick or standard); there are no scheduled round times. Zoom call with webcam required while games are in progress. Siblings and/or teammates may be paired. Byes are not permitted. Sections may be combined at tournament director’s discretion based on participation. 

 

 

Practice/Warm Up Tournament (Sections: K-1, K-3, K-5, 6-8, 9-12)

There will be a warm up blitz tournament on Friday, May 28 at 7 pm. The purpose of the tournament is for players to test their wifi connection, webcam, download zoom, join the zoom call to ask questions, and practice joining a tournament on ChessKid. Zoom call with webcam required so tournament directors can assist with questions. The format will be 5 rounds, G/5;+1. The event will not be rated and there will be no awards. Sections may be combined at tournament director’s discretion.

 

Registration Details

Open to Arizona residents in grades K-12. There is no playing up in sections 6-8 and 9-12.

Entry fee is: $25 by May17th. After May 17th entry fee is $35. Registration closes on May 24th at 5 pm MST.  After that registration is not guaranteed - the fee will be $45 and players will be added on a best effort basis. There is no registration the day of the tournament.

Players must have a current US Chess membership. You can join or renew here. You must have a current membership by May 28th at 7 pm MST or you cannot play in the tournament.

Byes cannot be requested.

 

Tournament Details

All players will receive a special username/password to use specifically for the tournament. If you already have a ChessKid account, that account will not be in use for the tournament. Usernames will be emailed to the email you registered with by Thursday, May 27. If you do not receive your username by Friday, May 28, please email information@sazchess.org.

The sections will open so players can 'join' starting 30 minutes before the tournament starting time. You must actively 'join' the tournament in order to be paired. Players are advised to join the tournament AND the Zoom call 20-30 minutes early. If you join at the last minute it may be too late to resolve any technical issues that you have. Players may be able to join the tournament late, but will receive zero points for any missed rounds. Limited late entry is available but is not guaranteed. Reentry is not available.

Players are advised to participate in the tournament from a computer. It is not recommended to play on a phone or mobile device.

SACA is not responsible for wifi connection or technical issues.

All results are considered unofficial until fair play review is complete.

All sections for both Saturday and Sunday will be US Chess online rated. The tournament will be rated 5-7 days after to allow for fair play review.

It is highly recommended that you join the practice tournament on Friday, May 28 to test your login, ask questions on Zoom, and practice joining a tournament.

 

 

Fair Play

Players are required to join the Zoom call for the duration of the tournament in order to be eligible for prizes. SACA reserves the right to interview players or ask players to share their computer screen during the tournament.

Tournament games will be reviewed by ChessKid/Chess.com and SACA tournament staff. SACA reserves the right to interview players after the tournament to determine prize eligibility.

SACA will abide by Chess.com Fair Play rules & US Chess policies. US Chess rules & consequences apply.

Computers and outside help are not allowed.

Players found in violation of Fair Play policies are not eligible for prizes, including being named a state representative. ChessKid/Chess.com & US Chess consequences may also apply.

Parents, please have your player watch ChessKid's Fair Play video and help them understand that it's just not worth it

 

Awards

Qualifier Tournament:
Team awards only. Team scores based on scores of top 4 players from the school team. No restrictions on teammates being paired. Top three teams in each section will be awarded up to five medals (one for each player plus coach). Minimum team size is 2 players.

Championship Tournament:
Any individual that scores 2 points or more wins a medal. Top three players in each section win premium medals.

Reserve Tournament:
Any individual that scores 3 points or more receives a medal.

Please allow 4-6 weeks for prizes to be mailed. Prizes will be mailed to the address included on your registration.
