A free tournament not rated by US Chess but generally following USCF rules.

Although registration may prompt for team / school, this is for pairing avoidance purposes -- there are not expected to be team awards.
A fun, free event with competition for everyone (as space allows!)
Two divisions: Open for all ages (one section) and Junior (three sections).
Open division: adults, collegians and high school students all compete in one section with two sets of prizes
Junior division: Grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 (for players aged 14 and under).
5 Rounds (non-elimination) -- a fun day of stress-free competitive chess!
Time Controls (if clock available): Open (Game/30; d2) / Junior (Game/20; d5)
Registration: Please register online by Tuesday, April 2 -- first come, first served for reservations -- no shows without notification from past events may be waitlisted.
We are at capacity!
Due to high demand and limited space, it is unlikely there will be walk-up registration available. Sign up early -- and notify promptly if unable to attend.
Check-in: 9:15am to 9:45am to assure first-round pairing.
Game Play: 1st Round: 10 am
Lunch: Please do not go far from the library -- rounds proceed As Soon As Possible (ASAP) -- when the last game finishes in the section, we start the next round within a few minutes.
In the Junior Division, there will be a short break after the THIRD (3rd) round.
In the Open Division, there will be a short break after the SECOND (2nd) round.
(Support the Pilsen eateries -- including the tamale ladies across the street!)
Award Ceremonies: K-2 by 2:30pm, other Junior sections by 3pm, Open division by 4:30pm.
Awards: Junior division, K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 sections: Top three per section plus top for each grade. Open division: Top five PLUS top three specifically for high school players,
This event will not be rated by US Chess but will follow USCF rules (touch move, castling is a King move, etc.) and tiebreak formulas, and will use published ratings for pairing purposes -- but will not impact USCF ratings. USCF membership is NOT required.
ASAP pairings each round (ASAP = as soon as possible once all games in a section are completed AND results are reported. Please don’t disappear between matches -- provide phone number if leaving the library. And please notify tournament director if you are dropping out or otherwise need to leave early. We don't want players to wait for an opponent who will never show up!

All equipment (including clocks) provided in the Open Division, all sets provided in the Junior Division and some clocks -- Juniors: please bring clock if you know how to set it. All players: please bring your own sets for skittles (practice) play or analysis.
If the game begins without a clock, the director reserves the right to "drop" a clock on the players with an equal amount of time -- most likely 5-minutes per side -- but other time controls are possible.

Organizer Hector Hernandez is the Lozano Branch Manager and coordinator of the Knight Moves Chess Club (KMCC) for more than a quarter of a century. The KMCC meets Thursdays at 6pm at the Lozano Library in Pilsen and there is no cost to attend. Tournament Director Bill Feldman is a long-time tournament director and coaches with the Fox Valley Chess Club in Aurora (meets 7:15 on Tuesdays). Both are past presidents of the Illinois Chess Association.

Other than where listed as “firm” all other times are approximate. Lozano events use “ASAP” pairings – as soon as possible, we start the next round. Please don't go far from the library -- there is no central intercom system!
